Car sharing for small communities
Road transportation accounts for 15% of total global CO2 emissions. Large cities
offer a wealth of transportation alternatives that make it possible to live life
without a car. In smaller cities and towns, it's far more difficult to move
without owning a car. While public transit and active transit options are best
for the planet and our wallets, these smaller communities are unlikely to jump
directly to those solutions.
Car sharing is an incremental step in the right direction that meets these small
communities where they are. The traditional car sharing business models —
managed fleets (e.g. Zipcar) and P2P sharing (e.g. Turo) — don't work in these
less dense communities. Rotor was an exploration of alternative business models
to bring car sharing to these smaller communities.
